We aim:

  • To build partnerships and collaborations between existing arts companies and organisations, educational institutions and voluntary organisations in Scotland locally, as well as nationally and internationally, e.g. between Scotland and artists from Africa and the African diaspora
  • To encourage engagement with the arts on all levels - from audiences to participants, in all artistic fields, e.g. film, music, theatre, literature and visual arts, with a focus on innovative and socially- conscious art
  • To increase access to arts for audiences and participants, in Scotland primarily but also further afield
  • To develop and expand arts audiences by creating opportunities for exposure to cultural products that people would have limited access to otherwise
  • To focus on artistic products linked to educational and social developmental issues, e.g. health (HIV/AIDS, mental health); equal rights (e.g. ethnic minorities, gender, disability, religion, race, age, sexual orientation); and cultures (e.g. histories and artistic traditions of diverse cultures)
  • To promote cultural exchange and diversity through a multi-cultural orientation towards arts in Britain, in order to challenge discrimination on any level and contribute to the development of a tolerant, compassionate society
  • To encourage dialogue and create understanding, tolerance and positive awareness between people from different national, cultural, ethnic and class backgrounds in Scotland and further afield
  • To recognise and promote the importance of involvement in creative industries for individual and societal development
  • To provide a platform for learning and create opportunities for skills sharing, training and development from community to industry
  • To support artistic products from developing countries in particular – Africa, Asia and Latin America and their diasporas in Britain – and to contribute to positive representations of these cultures in Britain
  • To provide a fresh variety of imagery and information of underrepresented and largely untravelled territories to Western audiences
  • To provide opportunities for the exhibition of underrepresented and marginalised art, e.g. Africa and the African diaspora, and overcome distribution and exhibition barriers
  • To create continuity in arts events, e.g. to establish annual arts events in Edinburgh and further afield
  • To stimulate intelligent discussion, debate, research and analysis of artistic products from various cultural traditions
  • To foster and nurture new talent, especially in underrepresented areas, through for example commissioning new work
